(1775-83), It was the struggle by which the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic seabord of North America won independence from Great Britain and became The United States. It is also called The American War of Independence. By 1774 each colony had established a Provincial Congress, or an equivalent governmental institution, to form individual self-governing states.
